Volume of water for yeast starters

I just read the BrewWiki article on yeast starters. It says to use one pint of water and 1/2 cup of dry malt extract.

It seems to me that that would make a starter of way higher than 1.040 SG.

I measured 1/2 cup of DME and weighed it; it was 3.0 ounces.

This calculator shows that with one pint of water (as the Wiki article suggests), that would be a starter of about 1.069 SG.

This page suggests that a starter should be a minimum of about one liter in any case.

It seems to me that the Wiki article is suggesting about one pint of water too little. With a quart instead of a pint, and 1/2 cup of light DME, it should be just about 1.035 SG.

Any thoughts?

Boil the amount of water you need to make your starter with and add 2 or 3 tablespoons of DME to it. Check your gravity and adjust from there.
