Hey guys, I am looking to build a 55 gallon smoker that is vertical in orientation and burns wood. I plan to make it indirect heat. I would like to have 2 cooking shelves inside. Does anyone have any suggestions or critiques of my plan?

Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter. :D

I think others have had the same idea, and people love them. They're called "Ugly Drum Smokers" or UDS for short.

If you want to go the easy route, there's a ready-made kit for the conversion.

Ugly drums work quite well ... and can be fun to build... as simple or as fancy as you want.

Here's a pic of my UDS. Built it on a whim from scrap/junk parts. I used a single intake, most of the designs I've seen use several small ones, but my drum had a 2" bung on the side so I used it.

Thanks for the links guys I'll see about doing some reading.

The smoker is really for another guy. I do fab stuff. I made a badass reverse flow last year for someone. That one ended up running him around $1800. But it was beautiful. I like these jobs because they pay and are fun! I have a giant pipe that I need to make into a smoker one of these days.
