Using beersmith for BIAB

for those of you using Beersmith, do you use the AllGrain profile or the Partial Mash profile when designing your beer?

Partial mash would be used only if you're mashing grain, but also adding some extract to the wort.

Use all grain, and also be sure to use the BIAB mash steps (or copy/modify them appropriately) when setting up your mash. I also seem to recall a bug of some sort, or maybe a weird miscalibration, that was causing it to recommend strike water volumes & temps that were way too high for my target step temps and final volume.

At some point, I wrote my own BIAB sizing calculator to work around the issue. I am not sure if it's still a problem in more recent releases, though.


I cannot remember if there's something specific you have to do in your equipment profile, but it would be worth checking all the options in there to make sure.

All grain BIAB. The numbers it tells me are right on the money assuming I tell it the correct values.

I haven't had issues. I took one of the stock ones and copied it. Here is mine

Grain weight basis 12.75 lb
BIAB with full boil, boil volume basis 7.5 gal
Water/Grain Ratio 2.353

Where IS the definitive guide to BeerSmith BIAB?

I'm pretty sure they have created a profile recently that is specifically for all grain BIAB. I tell the program the amount of grain and it tells me the strike water. It's generally very accurate.

My BeerSmith has a BIAB profile. Maybe update your BeerSmith so you can use this setting. It was pretty spot on for me.

Open Beersmith2.
Go to the Profiles tab at the top and click equipment.
The Equipment tab will open and you'll see a list of pots.
You can right click on one of the BIAB profiles and save a copy.
Double click on the copy and a profile window will pop up.
You can edit the profile here or you can use the "Equipment Wizard."
Down at the bottom of the profile window there is an "Equipment Wizard" button.
Click the button and it will guide you through a step by step process for making a custom BIAB profile.

I just used one of the BIAB profiles an set it up for my equipment. Still sorting everything out with this setup but so far, so good
