Using a wort chiller in Libya?

I hate to rain on everyone's parade but we may be treading into that odd gray area again...

Alcohol is officially banned in Libya, though in reality, alcohol is readily available through a local black market (anything from whiskey to beer to wine). It should be noted that penalties for unlawful purchase can be quite stiff. Travelers should always exercise appropriate common sense with respect to local laws and, more importantly, local sensitivities and traditions.

They say that the penalties for buying it are stiff, brewing is probably much, much worse...

I do wish you the best of luck with your brewing!!! :mug:

EDIT: After the fact I see you are military/embassy personnel, so you may have diplomatic immunities. Just be careful, we want you home in one piece!!!

Thanks for looking out for me but as you noticed, I am a diplomat with full diplomatic immunity. The State Department even arranges official shipments of alcohol orders for us (we have to pay for it of course). Even at high profile events such as the 4th of July party at the Ambassador's residence alcohol is served. I am only bound by US law. There are only two people in this country who have any authority over me: my colonel, and the US Ambassador. I have received the green light from both of them to brew away.

That being said, I don't abuse my privileges. I will keep my beer consumption limited to the confines of my diplomatic residence and will only share my brew with other diplomats.

this is what i'm talking about. you can certainly take a salt water mixture down below 0F without freezing, no doubt, everyone should understand that.

but if you have a bucket of ice sitting outside in 75F weather and you dump salt, that water will not cool down

Now if you have some ammonium nitrate lying around, dump that in the bucket, you could potentially turn the whole bucket in to an ice block.

There was a scene in the tv series Jericho where they made small amounts of ice using ammonium nitrate fertilizer and nested metal bowls. Pretty neat.

Now that we're completely derailed...I remember that show. I always wanted to know where the local bar got its booze. Did they every explain that?

LOL...If I recall some came from that wrecked train. But I also think towards the end of the series they actually ran out of booze and were just drinking coffee and water.

I'm watching this post holocaust series that I somehow missed in 02 called Jeremiah. They actually mention homebrew in a couple episodes.

That is good to hear. I would just hate to wake up and turn on my computer to have yahoo tell me "Today an American home brewer was arrested (or worse) in Lybia".

BMC already gives us a bad name abroad. lol but that is a different story.

Best of luck and I thank you for your service! :mug:

Right, this would work if you took salt water and put it in a freezer to freeze.

Ice which is at 32F will not get any lower than 32F just by adding salt alone. You need to then put it in an environment that is lower than 32F.

I just checked the temperature of my ice in the freezer and it reads about -5F. Ice can be at temperatures below 32F, look at the antarctic.

Get/use a wort chiller and install quick disconnects on it and it's "garden hose" attachments. Then I would grab up a cooler and a "pond pump" mod the lid of the cooler for the electric cord and the hoses, put quick disconnects on the hoses for the cooler chiller as well.

I would use the tap water to bring the temps down as low as possible, then switch over to the cooler, ice water thing. If you really wanted to multi task this thing all you need is the EBAY aquarium temp controller and a bucket to put the fermentor into. Then you could have a make shift temp controller as well during fermentation. (if you don't have one already.)

This would be a small enough set up that it should be fairly mobile. I think the salt water and other ideas get to messy and complicated. I wish you the best of luck!

He did say if you put it in an environment that is colder than 32F it will get colder than 32F, such as a freezer. The point is liquid water cannot get colder than 32F without becoming ice, unless it is salt water. Note that the water in Antarctica is salt water, which is one reason there is liquid water there.

All things being equal, we can add salt to ice and make it melt without actually lowering the temperature of the ice. We are just lowering the freezing point of the ice. It is one fo the reasons we add salt to the roads when a freeze is coming. Gotta love chemistry.

When I saw this post I immediately wondered if Libyia bans brewing. I would have to assume the sanctions are very serious.

This was already addressed in this thread...but maybe this video will be more helpful...

Yeah we're on same page.

i use immersion chiller + $15 submersible aquarium pump. i put my wort in the sink, next to it i put small pot, put the pump in it also ice and adjust the tap to flow a tiny bit faster than the pump can pump, after that add ice as necessary. works very well and i dont use much water this way.
