I weigh my sugar, so I have to guess how much "one cup" is, but it sure seems like a lot. I think 2/3 cup would be more typical.

I think you've probably used about 7 ounces by weight, while I would use 4 ounces for the same amount of beer.

You'll be near 4.0 volumes of co2. I'm not sure how strong the beer bottles are, but they should hold that without exploding if they are sturdy and not damaged.

.... but they should hold that without exploding if they are sturdy and not damaged.

..... and kept at or below room temp. I just say that because I once had some slightly overcarbed bottles conditioning and a few of them exploded when the ambient temps got high.

I was BWD (bottling while drunk) once, and read "2/3 cup of priming sugar" as 3 cups.

EVERY one of those suckers blew, most one night. Big mess...

:(

I thought i should be alright because the Homebrew bible says not to use more than 1cup ever for five gal and recomends 3/4cup but i wanted to know if anyone ever uses 1cup as a standard.
thanks for your replies

Back when I used to bottle when I first started brewing, I used 1 cup as my standard amount per the recommendation of a more "experienced" brewer. Never had a bottle bomb myself with 12oz bottles. Never even knew it was possible back in those days... I am pretty sure my friend still uses 1 cup per 5 gallon batch so I think you should be good.

You're fine with one cup. I use approximately that for higher carbed beers (though I measure by weight - 1 cup is around 5.5-6.0 oz from what I have measured, but can vary). You can go up to around 3.2-3.5 volumes in most bottles safely, and you should be within that limit with one cup.

Do yourself a favor and buy a scale if you can - it helps immensely, especiallyfor hop and grain measurements. You can get them fairly cheap on Amazon.
