I was wondering if I should use cheesecloth or a cloth of some sort on my primary because the gases that come out when I lift the lid could knock you on your but. Its fermenting vigorously. What do you seasoned winemakers recommend?

It really does not matter what you use to cover it. I make kits and have a primary bucket that came with a lid that has a hole in it with a gasket. I put an air lock in it and have never had a problem with it. Just as long as you have enough head space between the wine and the lid you should be fine.
