Title pretty much covers it. If an expat from U.S., curious where you live, and your perspectives.
 
I’m a US expat living in a Middle East country where brewing isn’t legal. Not monitored but not legal. Frankly, the lack of supplies is more of the deterrent than the fear of punishment. Have to bring it all in suitcases.
Perspective? Expat living has its ups and downs. Sadly with Covid, most of the ups (easier travel) are a bust right now. It takes some adjusting but you get used to it. Embrace the local stuff that doesn’t kill you.

Former ex-pat who worked Kuwait, Bahrain, and Iraq from 2004-2007 and again Iraq from 2008-2010.
Never dared to make anything by hand. We would have access to international duty free products discreetly stowed aboard cargo and logistical flights. As time went on some of these conduits were shut down, especially if you had to work under General Order #1 or with the more zealous folk who didn't sympathize with brewed or distilled spirits.
It's true. You appreciate it more when you don't have it.
 
Spent over a year in an Islamic country where alcohol was illegal (but was ironically everywhere if you knew where to look). At the embassy commissary, we could not get beer that wasn't destroyed by the time it got to us. So, we pieced together enough equipment to brew, mostly from a local market. Got extract based ingredients through the US embassy post office mail, no problem--took about 2 weeks. Dry yeast only. Made some pretty darned good beer, and was invited to a lot of fun as a result. Had to leave my boss a case of Kolsch before he let me fly home.
