I found a location that will sell me used/empty unmodified kegs for $12 apiece. I assume this is a good deal and bought 2 of them. I bet I could get many more until they wisen up or I find out that it is not a good deal. Any comments?

Others on here have gotten similar deals. It seems that there are a number of places, that don't think anything of letting the kegs go for the deposit. In one thread, I think it was beer truck driver that was letting them go

Where in Texas are you? I could use a couple fo kegs myself....

That was my case I got mine for $10 and it was the actual brewery representative (I live 10 minutes from SAB/Miller International HQ) that said deposit for the half barrel was fine. If it would have been the delivery guy I would have had some concerns about the ligitimacy of buying the keg for deposit.

Got mine for $20 bucks in pretty good conditional. Up here in the People's Republic of Massachusetts, all kegs are tracked, tagged, and monitored by the state, and all the packies need to report on what they sold, who bought it, and when the empty was returned. It is an effort to crack down on underage drinking, but makes it a little more complicated for the stores to just sell them for deposit, as they then need to report on that keg to the state, hence the slightly higher rate.

These are 15.5gal. I dont know if that's half barrel or what. I'm in DFW area.

Me too! Care to share where you are getting these kegs? I only need a couple of them. You can send me a PM if you like.

Are they Sankey (straight walled) kegs?

I have access to a lot of empty kegs becaue I live on a college campus. How do you use these to hold a homebrew? How do you clean the insides and sanitize them? Can you still carbonate with priming sugar inside a reused keg? I have been looking online and I can't figure out how to do any of this...

There may be a way to do it, BUT everyone I know on this forum who wants big kegs like this, are going to use them to brew beer with. The tops can be cut out and the things can be used to boil wort in, etc.

Check out a few of the member's photo galleries to see what I mean. DeRreaux's Breaux (probably spelled that wrong) has a nice three tier set-up in his.

Plus, it is questionable practice to just keep the kegs for the deposit money unless you ask first. Or has been stated as such by many.
