Ok just finished my 4th all grain brewing today was a hefe I have 2 10gal igloo style coolers and a fales bottom and I fly sparge.

My question is does anyone know what typical efficency out of a set up like this should be? my first was 72% second was 75% 3 was a serious screw up and only got 63% but today I added a piece of foil on top and just used my own grain mill for tge first time my efficency was 81.2% which seemed a little high? Any ideas?

Once you have a bit more experience you should be getting in the range of 75-85%. Plan on a bit less than normal for high gravity brews. Since grain is relatively cheap a low efficiency isn't a huge issue, so long as its consistent. Mine fluctuates between 70% and 85% and its a complete PITA designing recipes.

Does anyone ever get consistent efficiency? Also, how does one adjust the grain bill of a recipe to match your efficiency?

And something I've been wondering for a while:. is the mashing effeciency the same for all the different grain types in the same mash tun?

I set the gap on my mill until I got 75%. It took a few brews to get it right, but now I always hit it almost spot on every time. I do not feel the need to chase efficiency. Many recipes are written for 75% so it works great for me. Being consistent is more important than chasing higher effiency for me.

Consistency is a goal we all strive for as this creates repeatability in your beer production. I played with my mill gap but since I BIAB, I can be pretty fine. For my last 7 beers I averaged 81.07% keeping in mind these beers were not in the high gravity range. The lowest was 1.048 and the highest was 1.065. But to answer your question, I am getting within 1/2 of one percent consistency of the last 7 brews.

I use BeerSmith. For the efficiency number I input 80% so the program scales the grain bill for me to get the ABV and other variables the recipe calls for. If you sent me a recipe that calls for 10# grains, I would plug your recipe into BS with my 80% anticipated value and I may use only 9.5# of grain....as an example if your recipe assumed 72%. Not using real numbers, just an example.
