I couldn't make it through the original. Don't get me wrong. I love the Duke. It's just that chick's acting in the original was absolutely terrible. Painful even. Sad part is, I never got to see the shootout at the end until I found it on Youtube years later.

I've seen them both & I have to say I think the remake is a little "grittier." :D
Before I saw the remake, I didn't think Jeff Bridges would be able to pull it off; but he made a believable Rooster Cogburn...
More believable than Kevin Costner as Robin Hood. :p

I think we already have a thread about this that turned nasty, I have to agree. I like them both, but I really enjoyed the newer one more.

Hailee Steinfeld just stole the movie as Mattie.

Gotta add to the chorus. The original is what it is and of course John Wayne is the man, but the new one was just much better. Of course it had the benefit of years of cinematography and special effects advancements, so you have to keep that in mind. The final shootout was much better in the new one. I just can't get over the fact that Rooster had about 200-300 feet to close, but with all the times they cut back to him shooting he rode easily a mile!

Reminds me that I really want to see the new one. Uh, and the old one since I've never seen that one either. Not really a big Duke fan much. Not a big western fan to be fair. A GOOD one is worth watching, but there were a TON of bad ones made IMO.

But as long as there is a white bearded old dude serving beans around a campfire, it's all good!

I just watched Unforgiven about 2 weeks ago for the first time in a long time. That is a first class movie, definitely up there with the best movies ever made.

As far as I'm concerned the Coen brothers can make any and all westerns from here on out. I love Westerns, and they never pull any punches with theirs, which is how Westerns should be IMO. Loved the new True Grit.

Absolutely! This is probably my favorite movie ever! (Silverado is another one, and I'm not a big fan of westerns!)
I seriously started doubting my marriage after I saw Unforgiven with my now ex, and she just shrugged her shoulders and said, "I don't get it."

I haven't seen the original tbh. I downloaded it last night and watched the first 15 minutes. Will finish when I get the chance.

This.

For example...in the remake there's a scene where the older character asks the girl for his tobacco. She takes the initiative of rolling him a cigarette. That shows a certain level of prowess that is absent in the original. In the original he just asks for a cup of coffee/tea and she pours him one.

Thats in the original but I like the hanging scene in the remake. In the original they just dropped them.

Great movie, and yes, one of the best ever made IMHO. I say that because the movie broke from tradition in that there really were no good guys or bad guys. Everyone was deeply flawed and operated from the premise that they were doing the right thing (or just didn't care).

I saw the new True Grit and while I enjoyed it, I don't see it as being much better than the original. It works a bit better now because we can cast characters who are truly vulgar and nefarious (Rooster), while back in the Duke's day you had to be a lovable black sheep.
