I built this trub filter for my kettle but have not tried it yet. It's basically just a copper manifold with holes in the bottom, wrapped in SS mesh.

Has anyone tried something like this, and if so, did it work well? I have a hop spider so the purpose of this thing is to keep trub out of my chugger pump and plate chiller.

Is it going to plug up? Would it plug up if I didn't use the hop spider?

The only way to know is to try, right?

I've personally never had any luck with mesh like that. It clogs pretty easily. However, I've never tried anything nearly that big, so the larger surface area might do the trick.

And just to state the obvious, but using whole hops would make that filter work perfectly.

I'm using pellet hops but I have a 2 gal hop spider in my 16 gal kettle made out of the same mesh so I'll be surprised if I have clogging issues. I just tested with water and it only left about 3/8" deep of water when it lost suction. I was losing a lot more when I used a bazooka as a screen, so I'm looking forward to trying it out.
