Trip to Southern California

I am making a trip out to Southern California, Murrieta to be exact, to visit my folks. They have moved there since I have lived with them and I have never been there (been to San Diego once).

So I am looking for some good California beer to try and probably bring some home.

I will probably making day trips over to LA and San Diego. I have investigated the possibility of getting some Pliny. Since it isn't bottled it is going tough, but I am woeking on it. Anything else worth picking up?

I'm a fan of all of the Firestone beers, but they might not be as popular down south. (I'm in Santa Barbara on the central coast of CA). Currently a coworker has the oak aged porter on tap at work (Walker Reserve) and it is wonderful.

I am leaving tomorrow. I am probably going to go to the Stone brewery and take a tour.

Any one have any other suggestions?

You're right around my neck of the woods! You GOTTA go to Stone, and plan to eat there. No exceptions. Also, there's several breweries in SD, the San Diego Brewing Company (I think they go by Alesmith) and you HAVE to go to Pizza Port. They have one in Solana Beach, and Carlsbad, and maybe LA too. Word of advice:Start early, go to the breweries around 1PM, and stay off the roads between 4pm and 7pm. ESPECIALLY if you're around LA!

3 words.....Alaskan Smoked Porter! If you have not already tried it. its not cali, but the best I had while I was there.

I was looking at the food at Stone, quite expensive for a brew pub, but if you say it is good I will give it a go, Mom will probably pay anyways

Have you every been to the Lost Abbey Brewery? It is like 2.5 miles from Stone...probably go there too, I have heard them mentioned quite a few times. $3/Flight=4, 4oz pours with credit from that going to purchases...so does that mean all $3. If so that is a sweat deal.

I used to live in Bakersfield, and if you make it into the Bakersfield area, you should check out Lengthwise Brewery. A little micro brewery that is quite famous in the area for some damn good beer.

Stone is expensive, but then their menu is gourmet....lots of organics, pretty top notch even for most restaurants. The beer is some of the best around, IMHO. Did you end up going?
I gotta check out that Lost Abbey...I've seen it for sale at Pizza Port, but never got it.

Yes. We did not eat there, my folks were running late and were hungry before we could get down there. I'll have to save that for next time. Did the tour at Stone and the free tasting. Then went over to Lost Abbey, tastings are free if you buy something which of course I did.

If you can, go to Lost Abbey first. I went there after having my palate obliterated at Stone. I did have a nice buzz after both...
