Too tall racking cane

My racking cane sticks above the top of my carboy about 5 inches. It didn't siphon very well. Should I cut it so the crook of the cane is at the top of the carboy? Will it then work better. Thanks in advance.
 
No, that sounds like a standard length cane. Siphoning works better the bigger the difference in hight between the two vessles is. If you have one carboy on a table and one on the floor, it will siphon better than if you had one on a table and one on a chair for instance. Try increasing the vertical distance between the 'from' and 'to' vessles.
