I'm brewing my first all grain batch today... there is a lot of foam on the top of the boil. The chef in me wants to remove it as I would with a pot of soup or stock... Is this ok? Necessary?

Not really. It's just the hot break you get right before the boil that usually dissapears right after the boil starts.

Why would you do it with a pot of soup?

No need to skim.

I know the feeling. I always skim the foam off when i make stock, but there is no need to do it when you make beer.
