Tips for harvest time?

Anyone want to give me some tips on when the perfect time to pick the cones? This is my first season, the cones are getting really big now, help!

Harvesting time is usually at the end of Aug/beginning of Sep.

I guess it really depends on your location.

I've already pulled one cone and chewed on it. It had a nice spicy flavor, and the lupalin (yellow pollen) was present.

Once the ends of the cone leaves start turning brown it's time to pick.

I just got my ladder out this morning and could swear about half the cones on my Chinook are about ready to harvest. Like you, this is my first time and I'm not 100% sure what I'm looking for. The cones are drying out a bit, feeling papery (no brown yet on the tips) and if I rub one between my hands, I get a sticky resin.

I've resigned to the fact that you cannot talk at length about brewing without it being picked up as innuendo. I used to acknowledge the really obvious stuff on every post but it gets ridiculously tiring afer a few thousand posts.

One test used in Germany: flick a cone with your finger. If it snaps off, it's ripe.

Hmm, never heard that one before. Glad mine aren't ripe yet since we just had a bad thunderstorm that dropped 3" of rain in about an hour and 40mph gusts of wind!!!
