holy jeebus. Wifey just picked up Strange Land Porter and The Last Gentleman Bourbon Porter(also by strange land brewing). have to say, if shes right on what she paid, could be my new favorite BBA porter.

and the regular porter is pretty damn great as well.

and anything she can find, at an HEB, in bastrop, thats always a win.

I was at strangeland last time I was in Austin. Owner said they chop up the barrel and age it in the beer instead of vice versa to save on space and let them be more competitive on price. They are doing some pretty cool things over there and owner is a super nice guy. Gave my dad and I a private tour and was letting us sample some of their berliner from the tanks.

I'll be in Austin tomorrow through the weekend and plan to hit JK and search for whiskey unavailable in Chicago cause we can't have nice things.

Have a rental car and staying near university area hilton. Is total wine the best spot for whiskey like Willet 4 or 8yr, weller 12 etc? Or hit the Specs everyone has bashed?

Don't mind paying a premium either if there's any good specialty shops y'all suggest. Thanks in advance for any advice you might provide

Total Wine aint got nothing in the rare whiskey game yet... Spec's should have Willett 4 (and probably 8) on the shelf.

Planning a New Orleans to California road trip and thinking about the Texas portion.

On our way to either Albuquerque and or Sedona we will be stopping in Austin for two nights. Drive from New Orleans to Austin isn't bad and Austin to some other state, but any beery thInga to do in El Paso and or Houston? Am I missing any cool stops along the route?

Austin visit should work with Jester King hours and a visit on a Friday Saturday or Sunday.

Jester King is my favorite spot in the state.

Not even going to lie to build it up, the only thing you'd be missing in skipping Houston would be some awesome beer bars, a couple of the best cocktail bars around and a phenominal dining scene.

The breweries are neat, but not really anything that stands out head and shoulders above the rest in terms of uniqueness. If it means several hours out of the way from the pre-determined route, I wouldn't do it.

You're going to be driving through houston just to get to Austin anyway, so it's worth at least stopping for an hour or two. Friday is when fresh bottles of yellow rose hit shelves. Without going too far out from i10, you can grab some lunch at the breakfast klub and go 2 blocks down the street to the best bottle shop in town, d&q beer station. If you're staying for longer, killens BBQ is a must.

Has anyone been to Last Stand Brewery...I had never heard of it until I saw a guest tap at Stanley's but it's basically right down the road from JK. I haven't been yet but may stop in next time around. Looks like the tap room is only open on Sat.

It's a cute little building... I wouldn't say their beer is AMAZING, but by far the best was the coffee porter. I'd say their IPA was average to mediocre.

It's right next to Revolution Spirits where they're making some high quality gin, as well (I was visiting there specifically when I stumbled into Last Stand). Same road as Argus Cidery, as well (although they stopped doing tours a while back), about 1 mile past Jester King on Fitzhugh when entering from 290.

Stop in El Paso & eat a bunch of tasty Mexican food. And if you want to actually pop-over to Mexico real quick, you will be right next to Juarez. Just try not to be carrying anything too sketchy aside from copious amounts of craft beer.

Unless i get derailed friday by the newbie im shadowing me and a friend will be hitting JK sometime fri, and possibly Strange Land brewing on bee caves(still undecided on if fri will be both or if we will put off Strange Land til saturday, or hit SL first then JK) But either way ill try and post a few things over the weekend as its a Fathers Day beer weekend for me. Skip Houston. I live here now and the breweries are unremarkable. Not n bad beer, just nothing going out of your way for. Esp if driving, save the liver capacity. In ABU I'd hit up both Marble Brewing and LA Cumbre brewing without hesitation. Sedona is cool to look at as you drive through but traffic can be a pain.

Skip Houston and go to Magnolia (about 25 miles or so north). B52 Brewing and Lone Pint Brewing are the best things going on in that area. Also... LP Yellow Rose is super easy to get anywhere up there off the shelf (unlike the rest of the state).
