Me in about 12 min when I get 2 of the ~300 bottles rumored to be on sale for DB Speedway

How is it? Was thinking of skipping it.

Sold out, but on draft still in both the newly opened Mezzanine and in Anvil & Stave.

Plenty of port, so first ever wine like Speedway for me. Not getting raisin or plum that I feared tasting from their description, just a balance of bourbon & port. I think if you like port beers, you’ll like this one.

Its obviously not to be confused with other famous double barrel beers like Double Barrel Huna. I prefer the bourbon & rum or bourbon & apple brandy combo to bourbon & port. Never been big on wine stouts (like Wineification etc).

Yep, this stuff is bomb-diggity: https://bineandvine.com/shop/mead-cider-sake/apis-póltorak-jadwiga-750ml/

ETA: It was the world's #1 rated mead for like 10 years on Ratebeer.

Stuff is amazing. They used to make a 25-year-aged version that helped solidify this mead's reputation when it first broke into the US back in like 2003, which was made with I think 4:1 honey-to-water ratio (maybe higher). That drink is still one of the goddamnedest things I ever did taste. Absolutely phenomenal. For obvious reasons, it was difficult to keep ahead of the supply/demand curve on that one. Shortly after the initial import supply ran out, another wave hit stateside, which was I believe like 6-year or 7-year aged (and different proportions, I think like 4:1). I stocked up at Hi-Time Wine back in the day, placing a mail order for 6 bottles at like $28/each (which sounded like a lot, at the time), and I thought I was getting the 25-year but ended up with the 6/7-year. It wasn't the same. But the intervening 13 years have done wonders for it, and it has tasted better and better each time I've tasted some (which is very rare). I still have at least 2 full bottles, plus one that is partially full.

I know there have been times that the ingredient list (on a sticker in English, probably added by the importer) has included "Raspberry juice." But I'm not sure if this is a consistent additive, and obviously the recipe has varied over the years. And it has never really had a raspberry taste, from what I've tried.

Also, FYI, there is a version on the market without the (admittedly badass) wicker basket packaging, wax medallion, and rope, which instead has some cheesy-looking stickers that are meant to look like this iconic packaging. It's significantly cheaper (like $10-15 per bottle, I believe). Not 100% sure if it's the same drink inside, what with the variations in recipe already on the market... But it's worth exploring, for any cost-conscious mead lovers (I know that's almost an oxymoron nowadays) who are looking to stock up.

I'll bring a bottle of that 7+13 year-old whale sauce to Woodshop 11, if anyone wants a taste.

Did the batch 1 set from Honey Pot. Hnnng.
Also, #AllTheTwistedHorn. #DrinkLocal

Doesn’t matter so much that one meadery gets overlooked imo. I’m more concerned with the general enthusiasm for mead (& cider & sake) in San Diego. I want to see this grow more in popularity! Want people to get over this hazebro, pastry nonsense.

P.S. Check out Serpentine & Newtopia cider. Both are awesome. #TalkCider

Ha did Serpentine earlier this week and just took my friends to Newtopia today. Reviews are split, good times.

Split which which way? Do tell. Not a cider cicerooone, so happy to hear other opinions .

Legit split 50/50.

I prefered Newtopia but mostly because I prefer dry ciders (and meads). This is a group of 4, so you know...not a lot of input one way or the other.

I felt Serpentine was a bit more fruited in half of their ciders but all of them were sweet.

Edit: I prefer the scenery at Newtopia, moreso since my better half is gone for the weekend. Despite the women all being taken, it was still fun to watch. 0 *****, already txted her roughly the same thing. =P

Edit the second: I prefer dry meads and ciders anyways. Fruited tastes good, but can lead to bad mornings after based on how much it tastes like juice (and thus how much you think you can consume)

I went to Newtopia a couple months ago and though I liked it, I really wished they had a bog-standard cider so that you could evaluate the base flavors – everything I had was adjuncted to high hell.

Any other golfers in this group? We have six for the Pizza Port Golf tourney, could use two more to round it out to two foursomes.
