So, here's my assessment of the opening weekend for MLS.

1. A Less Violent Game?'
The refs were harder on fouls and even threw out two second yellows for persistent infringement, could MLS be moving towards a less violent play style? The refs were also harder on "simulation", particularly in Orlando the refs pulled out the yellow card for multiple "simulation" situations. On Sunday, the only game that didn't see a second yellow for multiple infringements was Sounders vs Revolution (two teams known for being "soft" in the league).
It's still pretty physical, IMO. But I dig the simulation cards.

2. Big Money Pays Off
Whether it's Altidore's brace, the Dempsey and Martins show in Seattle, NYCFC vs Orlando or Keane in LA, the vast majority of goals were scored by designated players this weekend. With a few exceptions (I'm looking at you Villa!) MLS designated players showed why they earn the big bucks. The new CBA increases the minimum salary, but it's pretty clear why teams continue to chase the "right" designated player.
KEANE-O!

3. Fox Sports Did...Okay
A lot of people were worried because Fox Sports is taking over from the very excellent NBC/NBCSN soccer coverage, and that's a very valid concern; that said, Fox Sports did okay this weekend. While the announcing for Sporting vs Red Bulls was terrible (seriously, super bad, like hearing paint dry), Lalas and Strong make an excellent "A team" of announcers. Even if you dislike Lalas (I do!) there's no doubt his team is superior by a large distance to the "B team" and that even if you don't like his opinion he at least expresses it in an entertaining way. From an in studio perspective, Landon Donovan may be an excellent analyst from a technical perspective, but the man needs to let some emotion into his voice; I think he will improve. Overall, I can't complain too much about their coverage, after all, NBCSN stumbled a bit at the outing too.
I don't know, I thought they did a really good job. The shrinking screen bothered the crap out of me but not enough to the point I didn't enjoy the experience.

4. Unimas is a Problem
The opening game was on Unimas, but Unimas is not on the vast majority of cable and satellite packages. Set aside, for the moment, the idea of a primarily English speaking country having to turn on SAP to understand what is being said by the announcers, the fact that Unimas isn't on most TVs is an issue. I've heard that Unimas had a live stream that was free, after the fact, but MLS didn't advertise this, perhaps because they have a pay to watch streaming service themselves. MLS needs to sort this out and either advertise the live stream or find an alternative way to get this on most TV sets.
Simulcasts, both over different networks and different languages, seem like they are logistical nightmares. I'd say the vast majority of people with access to UniMas (and if you don't have AT&T) got to enjoy English on a Spanish network. I, myself, used a Canadian VPN and watched it on MLS Live, which has the SAP function and is amazing.

5. Sloppy Openers
Most of the games on tap this opening weekend were pretty sloppy, filled with fouls and restarts. Part of this is because of the refs finally clamping down on fouls (see 1.), but I think a lot of frustration and jitters from the CBA are a factor here too. I'd expect to see smoother games come next month.
A little sloppy but I thought every nationally televised match was very entertaining.

Personally I am glad they were carding for simulation, anything to make em think twice before going down
This. I've converted several people who used to say, "I think soccer is cool but I can't watch it because of all the diving" and all I have to say is, "MLS fines and suspends players for diving."

MLS: Dempsey/Martins looked good. Expecting good things from Seattle this year.
Great things. Terrible, yes.... but great.

Seattle is arguably the best team in the west. I don't know if anyone will compete with them. Aside from LA when they add Gerrard. East looks like they have a handful of quality squads. TFC looks great, New England should be in the mix, they were without arguably their 2 best players,
I don't know, LA is looking pretty freaking solid without Gerrard [/homerism]

But yes Seattle will probably take #1 in the west. However I think their competition for the Shield may be from New England, who find themselves in a weaker conference (unless NYCFC and OCSC come storming out of the gate.)

TFC will make the playoffs. Calling it now. I'll wait a few weeks before I decide if they will be in the knock-out rounds or get a bye come November.

We're not in the Caldron. My wife tells me she's too old to stand for an entire match, so we sit with the oldsters on the west side.
Heh, either way you're there and supporting your boys. They're looking pretty solid, even after getting gutted a little. Dwyer needs to work on his finishing, though.

.

LA is a very good squad. Keane is one of the best strikers in the league if not the best, Zardes is gonna be fast on his way to being a designated player, and Robbie Rogers to LB was pure brilliance. LA is strong, but when they put Gerrard behind Zardes and Keane lots of goals should happen.

Afterwards, Dwyer said that his wife would have scored at least twice on the looks he got, which is probably true given who his wife is. Poor finishing aside, his work rate with a real finisher behind him this year (we hope) will pay dividends.

In other news, Seattle is looking scary, but I keep telling myself it's just a single game. That's still a fearsome roster, though.

I think that'll be Seattle all year. Granted, the Revs have injury issues, but Seattle will dominate. Welcome to the West! ;)

Edit: Also worth noting, MLS Live saved my SAP option from last week. It's the little things in life :D

How can Chelsea be the most hated?! These same tactics can be seen with any BPL team. Just because your own team cannot hang, does not mean we deserve to be hanged.

Absolute nonsense. Give me any example of another PL team acting like Chelsea did this week in the last 15 years? I'd say since the Roy Keane United side we've not seen a PL side harass a ref in such a manner.

Chelsea really are the most despicable club in England. From a racist captain, to racist fans, to harassing refs, to the least classy manager in the game. Chelsea are just despicable.

Don't mind him. Typical Chelscum whining.

J/K ;)

Out of character for me, QPR v Palace held no interest so I'm watching Bundesliga. St. Pauli v Frankfurt. My Deutsch is not good enough to understand the commentary. I can pick out the occasion "die" "der" and "aus" hahaha. And humming "I'm forever blowing bubbles".

I'm....uhhh....probably going to spend the rest of the day hiding under the covers. Back in true Spursy form, I suppose. Last few months must have been a fluke...

Another MLS weekend down, another Portland tie. A few thoughts on the weekend.

1. NYCFC Has a Tiny Field!
Seriously small field for NYCFC in Yankee Stadium, you need to really be accurate with your passes. The longball is pretty powerful here, if you can put it in accurately, as Tierney showed. Of course, the longball is nothing if you can't do anything with it, and right now New England can't seem to put it in the back of the net; at least six really, really good chances that should have been goals by my count in the first half, if even half of those get converted New England win. I felt that send off was a little harsh, but the momentum had been with NYCFC for most of the second half at that point, so I don't think it was the deciding factor. New England needs to find their scoring boots, and soon.

2. Philly Got Robbed
Not much else to say here, no way that was a penalty, Philly should have walked away with a road win there.

3. Portland Keeps Drawing
At a certain point, someone in Portland's HQ is going to get tired of the Timbers getting draws and fire Caleb Porter, I'm not quite sure what the problem in Portland is, but unless those draws are also accompanied by some wins you won't get into the playoffs in the west with nothing but draws.

4. The Evans Experiment is a Failure
I get it Sounders, Evans is a really talented guy and it's a shame that he might have to be on the bench; but he's simply not going to work as a Center Back. One goal in Saturday's defeat was directly due to an Evans' screw up and he contributed to another. In the previous game only the bad luck that has been haunting New England prevented that match from being much closer, often on screw ups by Evans. Either have Zach Scott come back in at center back and have Evans be a "super sub" and your all around midfield back up, or trade him for a dedicated center back. There's a lot of teams in the league with spare center backs that could use a midfield talent like Evans, I'm sure the Sounders could get a good deal for him.

5. Toronto's Supporting Cast is Their Biggest Flaw
Toronto has some big names, Altidore, Bradley and Giovinco, and that's great, but the rest of the team really does need some work. Whatever you thought of the refereeing for the match, that straight red was legitimate and the result of a pretty horrible break down in the back. Toronto is the shining example that big designated players aren't enough to win you games in MLS.

A) I'm super glad Portland drew :D Seriously, that was an emotional game!

B) NYCFC has a small field but it's not as ridiculously tiny as it seems. The camera angle is low (for some reason, think "Buckshaw") which lends it to look even smaller. But it's 110x70yds, which is believe is the size Portland entered the league with.

I'm usually a low-grade Portland fan, but I'm hoping they lose this weekend. Lord knows, we need the three points in KC. Despite the drubbing in Dallas, we actually played pretty well last weekend. The first goal was a rookie mistake, the second was a blown call by theAR, and the third was a counterattack when we were chasing the game.

I only wanted to contest your last point, but wanted to keep what you said in the first point highlighted.

The red was not deserved in the TFC game, he won the ball cleanly, and it wasn't an excessive use of force. It was a bad call to call that a foul. The foul in NE was an example of a Red being called correctly. He fouled someone and denied them an obvious goal scoring opportunity. It was a pretty soft foul but he extended his arms and played the player not the ball.

When you win the ball non-recklessly a foul should never be called. It was called because of incompetent reffing. In a better position he doesn't call that a foul and doesn't have to give a red.

Rewatch that in slow motion, Morrow absolutely plays the player and not the ball, in any other situation that's not a card and is merely a professional foul, but he's the last defender; by the rules of the game that's a straight red. It's not just about "recklessness", it's also about whether or not you primarily played the ball; Morrow barely even gets a piece of the ball but gets all of the other player. What's more, any defender knows that if you screw that up you're going off. That said, even if you think it wasn't a foul, it's very very hard to call that one in real time; viewed from behind, it would look like Morrow got incidental contact with the ball and all of Findley.

I have rewatched it. He got the ball. You're right he got Findley too after getting the ball. It was a severely questionable foul. Much more questionable of a red than the one to Goncalvez.

Here's the thing that I constantly have to explain, it isn't just "did he get the ball" it's did he get the ball fairly? His slide tackle number one, appears to get Findley first (always a foul) and he got much more of the man than the ball. Either way, like I said, that's a very tough call to make as a ref in real time; even though I think the ref got it right (and I'm not alone with that). Horrible referee work for the other portions of the game, but he got this particular call right.

The NYCFC foul, by contrast, while Goncalves had an obvious hand reach on the replay, it appears that the NYCFC player is already going down before the hand comes around (had it not, he may very well have been booked for diving). In real time it looked shoulder to shoulder to me, only when I looked at a replay did I note the arm. It's a foul and yes, for the same reason it's a red card, but it's a much softer foul.
