Hello Homebrewers,

Noob question:

How does everyone maintain/control their temp when in the fermentation process?

Belt?
Room with heater?

I live in MN so it’s a little on the cold side as of now....

Thanks!

When I need heat. STC-1000 controlling an aquarium heater in the water bath/swamp cooler. Can also plug in a fan to accelerate cooling of the fermentor wrapped in a wet towel.

NOOB here, first batch in fermentation! In Florida where 65-75 degrees just doesn't happen much. It is 75-80 in the garage now. What is that going to do to my fermentation time? I am planning on getting a used refrigerator and make a raspberryPi thermostate in the future but need to see if/how this brewing hobby goes first.

That high of a fermentation temperature will speed up the fermentation. It also will create some flavors you won't really want in your beer and probably fusel alcohol which will give your beer a "hot alcohol" taste and with too much consumption will lead to hangovers. You need to get that beer cool for at least the first 3 days as the yeast eat the easy sugars. Once the fermentation slows the temperature can rise without much problems. Keep it within reasonable temps anyway, below 80F.

With plenty of time in the fermenter and more in the bottle some of the off flavors will go away. Not so much on the fusel alcohol.

I live in Texas and keep them in my utility room which is climate controlled around 70

Seems to work fine

I keep my fermenters in a swamp cooler (I guess that’s what it’s called) in a closet. Lowers the temp by about 5 degrees. Using a fan could lower the temp even more (so I’ve read).

I'm in SD where it's -20. All I have to do is turn the heat down to around 68-70 to get the desired ambient temps. I chill my fermentor in a sterilite ice bath for the first 2-3 days of fermentation and keep it around 60-66, and then let it sit at ambient. I am limited to 3 gallon lagers due to not having space for a freezer.
