So I bottled an American Porter about a week ago, and for some reason when I agitate the bottles (as per usual, to help carb along), it seems there's already a hefty amount of bubbles up at the top. I used about 5oz of Corn Sugar for a 5 gal batch (shooting for 2.5 carb level), and about an oz of heading powder. Stuff seems REALLY carbed already, but I haven't cracked one open yet. Has anyone else run across this?

Edit: It might be worth mentioning that there doesn't seem to be any bulge in the caps, and that the beer didn't smell/taste of infection at bottling time.

First of all, I don't think you can verify carbonation by shaking a bottle. Regardless, agitating the bottles is definitely not necessary as a standard practice. Maybe after 3 months of waiting for a high gravity beer to carb it might do something for you, but otherwise it's unnecessary.

Either way beer can certainly carbonate in a week if there's enough yeast and the bottles are warm. I've had a weizen carb up almost overnight! Stop worrying and leave the damn beer alone for another week or two :p

I wasn't worrying - it was more of a curiosity. Also, I opted for the 'don't leave it alone' option. I opened one, and holy crap, it's carbed. I'm gonna give it a little longer in the bottle to mature a little, but WOW was it great.

Throw a sixer or more in the fridge for a few days to allow the CO2 to be absorbed evenly throughout the beer. You will be pleased with the result. :mug:
