I recently asked a few questions around IPAs and applied that wisdom to this recipe:
https://beerandbrewing.com/VvV1WCcAAFgR3g0e/article/lawsons-double-sunshine-ipa-recipe

.. and it came out amazing. The aroma in particular is outstanding. Right from the first bottle, it smells like a commercial one, huge tropical notes.

So, used pretty much the same approach with the next one:
- almost identical malt bill
- same mash temp
- same yeast (US-05)
- 60 min addition was Citra rather than Columbus
- whirlpool was 50g Amarillo 50g Simcoe
- dry hop was 50g Amarillo 50g Simcoe

So over 3oz each in whirlpool and dry hop.

Cracked the first one last night - it's good, big fruit palate, but doesn't have the same huge nose as the first.

Is Citra just a beast in this regard?

Obviously I've left a lot of detail out, can clarify if it could be process rather than ingredients.

citra is a beast. cascade also has insanely good synergy with the popular fruity/citrus hops. if you like pinapple and mango hop flavors try doing citra cascade with some amarillo. also the hops will always vary. so when you get some that were high quality savor the flavor and aroma. :tank:

Citra is a waste earlier in the boil. - it doesn't have that same effect that something like columbus would have on the bitterness, sharp and citrusy, its only any good for late whirlpool/dryhop

I think you have also figured out you prefer the fruiter versions of IPA's rather than the citrus grapefruit flavors your probably experiencing with amarillo/simcoe.

IMO you could use citra mosaic simcoe and amarillo and dryhop exclusively with citra

Thanks for the notes and suggestions, appreciate it - it's not a taste question though, I don't mind citrus, mostly curious why the Citra one was so pungent compared to the other one.

I understand Citra won't contribute much early, the LHBS sells in 100g bags so was trying not to have leftovers. It contributes IBUs though.

Using it for the dry hop with other hops is a good idea.
