I'm looking at picking up a 14 gallon conical fermenter in the next couple of weeks, and I was curious about temperature control options. I know that SS Brewtech sells their own system, but since I already have an immersible pump and a digital temp controller I was curious about just rigging something up.

Has anyone successfully done something like this, or am I better off just buying the official product?

yes blue discharge hose wrapped around the outside of some conicals without the legs that get in the way works amazingly well to chill with a pump and cold liquid solution... insulated the whole thing with foil faced bubble wrap from the insulation isle and some foil ac/heat duct tape and your all set. I do this with some of my conicals shown below in my thread and will do it with the next one I buy. a chiller will pay for itself over running 3-4 fridges for multiple conical temp control.

I was actually planning to buy the 14 gallon BME with the built-in immersion chiller and insulated jacket. I'm just trying to decide on whether I need to spend $120 on the SS Brewtech temp controller and pump or if I can make my existing gear work.

I guess all I really need is a cold water supply and some 3/8" hose.

Yeah that will work too.. and as you guessed a pump, bucket of ice water or a cold water bath with a coil in it placed in a fridge or freezer works too.
