If a recipe calls for 8 bs of 300 SRM roasted barley, and I buy 400-500 (lovibond) product, do I need to adjust the amount? Thanks!

8 lbs of roasted barley! Wow! How big a batch? What are you brewing?

thanks for expressing that amazement. Recipe called for 8 OZ NOT lbs. Geez. Maybe I should put down "How To brew" and go buy "How To Read" May help :)

as far as lovibond vs SRM what do you think?

300srm is a lot different than 500srm,

There is a reason they call 500+ black barley. You should get a good roasty, grainy flavor from the 300.

400-500 is almost more about color than flavor but 500 will give you a strong roasty flavor and just a little darker color than 300, 500 can be a little astringent but (8oz) is fine for a standard 5 gallon batch, 8lbs, well that is a whole different flavor realm! lol

SRM and Lovibond are the same measurement. I think SRM is usually reserved for beer color and Lovibond for malt color (though I know that some malts are listed with an SRM value). It might actually be two methods for measuring the same thing.

regardless, 1 SRM unit = 1 Lovibond unit
