Speidel Heating

I recently bought a Speidel 30L fermenter and have a new (to me) problem. I was previously using a glass carboy and had a little space heater in my chest freezer to regulate temperature. With the carboy I had the temp probe taped to the outside. With the Speidel I poked a hole in the top and put in a thermowell and put the temp probe in there. The problem is that my space heater is cooking the top empty half of the Speidel trying to regulate.

I need help with a new solution for heating. Unless there is a way to make the space heater work. I am hoping I don't ruin the batch that is in there now.
