Does anyone use a space heater in their chest freezer for the winter months? I was thinking about using my chest freezer (kept closed and freezer off of course), a space heater, and my johnson controller to run the space heater at 60-62F for fermenting ales. Has anyone done this? Do you think there are any potential fire hazards? Of course, I would aim the heat in a direction that doesnt blast directly on to my carboys.

A space heater in the fermentation chamber is pretty common, just use some common sense to keep from burning your house down. Also make sure that the temp probe is securely inside your fermentation chamber with no chance of it falling out.

I use a $1 ceramic light fixture and an infrared heat bulb meant for terrariums that works great. I put it under the shelf that my carboys sit on, and have it wired into my temp controller.

where did you get a ceramic light fixture for $1. I may go that route. Do you recirculate the air at all or leave it as is?
