Looking for my next adventure in HB - and had this little beauty last night. I would like to shoot for something like the Southern Tier 2X IPA and wondered if you guys had any suggestions for kits that might get me in the ball park. The last kit I did was a DME / specialty malt kit, which was pretty easy to do, but if I have to do AG to get a clone for this one, I might put that off for a while.

Not much info on their site. Most IPAs are easily reproduced as extract batches. Most recipes are base malt and crystal + lots of hops. I would e-mail S.T. and ask them. You might be suprised at what the brewers at some craft breweries will tell you. I got some help from a brewer at New Belgium awhile back on a clone of one of their beers.

From ST: 2xipa
“4 types of hops & 3 types of malts”
Not quite an imperial, but certainly not a standard India pale ale. Our double IPA is a hop lovers dream. Citrusy and clean with an incredible finish.
8.3% abv • Double India Pale Ale

OT: Props to your LHBS. I drive up to Ozark to get my base malt at The Homebrewery.

That's good advice - dad always told me 'you never know until you ask!'.

As far as our LHBS - I know - they're great guys and have been a great help in getting started.

Me and my buddy drinking 2X IPA right out of the tank on one of their brewery tours. Sooooo good. :rockin:

Yeah so I'm also wondering if anybody has the recipe to this?? Loving the floral aroma on this, keen to know the types of aromatic hops used

I get tickled to hear the Tier is well accepted- been to their brewery a bunch and, like above, feel more like it's just the local crafty. As for the recipe....no help here. Give 'em a ring- in my experience everyone there is really cool. Kyle

Love the 2XIPA, it's the first real West-coast style DIPA I've had that was brewed here in the East.

The last two times Ive ate at the Vortex in Atlanta, I had a few. Very good beverage.

Noticed something I forgot the other day while in Wegmans: they print their recipe for on the 22oz bottles. Snapped a cell-pic of the Unearthly. I hope it's not un-kosher to post here, as I figure it's public information. Anyway, if I find the 2x in big bottles I'll try to remember to do this. Kyle

Don't think it will ever get into those bottles, those are reserved for their Imperial Series. Honestly, it almost seems like they were going for a slightly Pliny-esque DIPA. Not much malt character, dry, and a metric sh!t-ton of hops.

I've also had the tour. If you look at the clipboard in the pic...there is the recipe in check off list. I have pictures from the last tour I took, but they were not the DIPA.

I don't feel comfortable posting what I have either. Also, anything from Ellicottville brewing is basically the same in case you didn't know. EBC is owned by the sister (by marrage?) of STB but STB does all the hard work.

Found a recipe on beersmith-

The hops you are smelling are the citra. They have a very distinct smell.

And I just realized this is a really old thread. sigh.

Just email them. They wont give you an exact recipe but they will give you lovibond, ABV, OG and a nice description of the malts and hops. I've done it before with other beers.
