My brewing buddy and I have found 5 pin-lock kegs in the past two weeks. Some need some maintenance, and some are in great condition. I think a Coke delivery guy is dumping empties or something, and we're reaping the benefits.

Anyways, I hadn't planned on getting into kegging for awhile but this kinda forces it. I'm wondering if it's best to just buy my tank and regulator from the LHBS or have people been able to do some bargain shopping at stores/websites I might not be thinking of?

I'll probably just buy the hoses and taps from the LHBS.

Look around for used CO2 tanks. Everything else will probably have to come from the LHBS or online.

I second looking for used co2 cylinders. Look for a local company that does the hydrostatic testing on out of date compressed gas cylinders. That is whata I did. I got a 25 lb tank for 55 dollars.

also if you plan on getting a "kegerator" (new or used) they almost always come with a tank.

Wish I would have seen this before I bought mine. This one is nice because no tools are needed to adjust the pressure. If you think you would like to have two beers keged at the same time consider going with a dual so one can be set at dispensing psi while the other could be set higher psi for forced carbonating.

Before you go out and buy the gauge for your C02 tank I would decide right now if you are going to use 2 different pressures for different beers, if not then the link above will work great, if you do decide you will want 2 different pressures then Id go with something like this now so you dont have to fork out more money later and deal with the hassle. Look at the price difference between the 2 and youll see what I mean. You can always get this now anyway and just turn the valve off for now, it will also let you turn up the pressure to let you carb a keg while having the other set for dispensing a previously carbed beer.
