Smoking grains with other than wood

I was watching Iron Chef (the original and best) and saw an ingredient smoked with coffee beans. Anyone out there ever try that with grains?

I have not, but it might be a better use of coffee beans past their prime, than making coffee to drink.

Sugar Creek makes a lavender-smoked malt, sadly currently out of stock. I've made a couple of lavender-smoked lagers, as well as a lavender-smoked helles eisbock.
