I am looking at doing a single hop pale ale series to understand hop flavoring. I am looking for any grain bill recommendations that would be clean and not have distracting flavors.

I currently do a Citra pale ale with the following grain bill:

11 lb Pale 2 Row
12.0 oz Caramel 40L
12.0 oz Flaked Wheat

I am not sure this is what I want to use because I think the wheat will be a bit distracting.

Just looking for some thoughts.

My simple APA grain bill I use to test out hops is:

10# 2 Row
1# Carastan
.5# Carapils

Pretty similar to what you have. I think the carastan provides just enough malt backbone while letting the hops absolutely shine through even in smaller doses.

I use 20-30% wheat in about anything hop forward that I make. It certainly isnt distracting at all. I think you are confusing wheat malt with typical wheat yeast esters

I tend to just use 95% MO and 5% torrified wheat for a 4.5% - 5% or so single hop brew.

Thanks guys.

That was the assurance I needed that the wheat won't affect the flavor. I will probably stick to this recipe.
