A friend told me that i should not drink homebrew out of the bottle When it is naturally carbonated. Is this true? Will the yeast sediment create off flavors?
Is it only wise to pour it into a glass?
It is very combersome to bring a glass everywhere i go when i want to drink a homebrew.

You can drink it out of the bottle. The reason not to is you might poop yourself the next day because of the yeast. My inlaws drink it out of the bottle when I bring it over. I never mention it to them. I always think about them the next day and wonder how they are fairing.

BTW, no off flavors occur from this imo.

I always end up giving people a lesson on how to pour it into a glass properly when I give them homebrew. If you don't mind the yeast go ahead and drink it out of the bottle but I don't want to drink it unless it's a weizen or something.

Why would you want to drink any beer out of a bottle? Even Bmc has some character which you miss out on if it's not in a glass.

Like great neck said, you wouldn't drink wine out of a bottle why should you drink beer straight out of it?

We taste with two other senses, smell and sight, especially smell, and you miss out on so much by drinking it from the bottle.

The only time I do is when one of my friends bottles some of his beers in plastic pop bottles with the labels still on, so we can take it into places where your own beer is not encouraged but they don't think twice about a pop bottle. But that is maybe twice a year...

I always poured, but a friend of mine in college used to drink my homebrew by the 24, straight out of the bottle. He never complained about side-effects.

You should pour it in a glass and enjoy the aroma.

Why do yu think that 12 of the 50 points in a BJCP score are devoted to Aroma.
Overall impressions are only worth 10.

Getting the most out of the beer is one thing. The yeast is another. Someone mentioned getting the poops from the yeast, but if you get used to it, it will help in digestion and the pooping will subside. I always drink from a glass, but I don't worry about pouring in a bit of yeast. It is good for you. Don't give a woman too much yeast though, that is a HOLE different situation.

I pour until there is about an inch of beer/sediment left in the bottle, then i swirl that around and drink it. I usually just fart a little more than normal, that's it. I'm getting my B Vitamins :)

You can drink it out of the bottle, if you want to chew the last few ounces. It's up to you. I use a glass, because i like to see and smell what I am drinking. But it's up the you.

I pour mine into a glass. However the 1/2" - 3/4" of beer in the bottle, I swirl and shake with the yeast; and I drink it. I get the B vitamins from the yeast. Helps with hangovers and regularity!!!

Really it's up to you, everyone's system is different so while you may not have any gas issues, your buddy might. The thing about the gas issue some people have is that with regular exposure to the yeast your system will build a tollerance and adapt to it. That being said, I know for a fact that yeast can contribute flavors, they can be considerd off, but not always. Some styles like hefeweizen and such are ment to have yeast in them. I always try a bottle of home brew with and without yeast just to see how it effects the flavor. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. Again all these things are up to you and I'd recommend experimenting a little to find out what you like. Cheers! :mug:

Glass all the way...

Whatever you prefer. However, I'm with most people in that not sure why you would want to drink from the bottle unless you just don't have a glass to pour it into.

I like to smell and also see my homebrew. I think the color and clarity is a big part of my homebrew so I always pour it into the glass and take some pride in what I have created. Also, to me it always seems to taste better out of a cold mug. I do this for all beer, not just my homebrew.

Yeah, I also pour it in a glass and then swirl & drink the last half inch or so out of the bottle. Maybe my palate just isn't real sophisticated, but most of the time I can't tell a difference, textural issues aside.

I pour so I can enjoy the clarity, retention, lacing, aroma... all that good stuff you can't measure in a bottle.

That said, you wanna drink from the bottle, drink from the bottle. Heck, as someone who's drunk wine directly from the box more than once, who am I to judge? Do what makes you happy.

I'm with the always drink from a glass crew. Everyone always covers the impact of aroma, head and appearance on the drinking experience, but one thing that's often overlooked is carbonation. I always find bottled beer to be a little too sharp with the carbonic acid bite, and a lot of beer is overcarbonated in the bottle in order to cap on foam and still retain CO2 etc etc. Pouring into a glass will break some of that CO2 out of solution, bringing head proteins and aroma up to the top, as well as settling the carbonation equilibrium to a nicer mellow level.

BMC can be drank directly out of the bottle, especially when lighting farts and comparing relative breast sizes of the supermodels. You can also drink BMC out of the bottle while watching contact sporting events or engaging in macho outdoor activities. One does not pour a Budweiser into a glass before one guts the latest kill.

I pour into a glass when I'm at home, but I don't worry about the yeasties at the bottom. In a delicate beer you may notice a slight flavor, but in a stronger flavored beer you wont notice anything. I used to live by a beach that allowed alcohol and I'd bring Sierra Nevada (bottle conditioned) and drink from the bottle as I wasn't going to carry a 6-pack and a pint glass to the beach.

I should make a shirt with an empty brown bottle that says "I drank the yeast." for those of us that are not worried about the yeast.

Assuming you are trying to be snarky and refer to a yeast infection, tha'ts a big: Um no. That's not only a totally different type of yeast, it is also already "in place" and has nothing to do with ingesting yeast. This is not even to mention that men can also get a yeast infection, so pinpointing women was crass and unnecessary.

99.9% of the time in a glass.

However, the lack of a glass should never discourage one from having a beer.

In the summer at times, I break the rule and drink out of a bottle, esp if I'm washing the car, hanging out in the yard, etc....

Wow, you know how to take a joke and grind it to a pulp don't you? Get a life party pooper.

Sorry, that post struck me in the wrong way entirely. A joke is one thing, a joke based on presumed believe in blatantly wrong information is another entirely. This is one of those bits of "misinformation" that I've heard in many places, and which actually worried my wife when I started brewing until I dug up info to calm her down.

That, plus I'm extremely pedantic by nature.

When I go to parties I am sometimes forced to (college and most people dont understand) because a glass or hell even a cup can be hard to find. Otherwise no for the reasons mentioned above, although you could end up with some batches where you end up not really wanting to smell the aroma :D

Obviously a glass is the first choice for most everyone. I keg my beer, so drinking out of a bottle is extremely rare. I do, however, fill up 1 liter bottles from the keg when I go places that do not allow glass. I will then drink from the plastic bottle. No yeast to worry about for me in that case.
