That way in a few weeks when you do a brew and it has a very active fermentation you will not have to worry so much about it spilling out of your blow off tube !
Not always. In this case the OP says they want to use it as a secondary. In secondary you want as little head space as possible. I use a 6 gallon for primary and when needed, a 5 gallon for secondary.
dont some people secondary with friut or other things in there as well as the beer? would this make the volume over 5 gallons requiring a 6 gallon carboy?
