Long time listener, first time caller.

I'm not especially experienced, have 8 batches behind me of extract or partial mash so bear with me if this is crazy.

When doing all extract (LME) plus speciality grains, I had tended to put two 1.7KG tins (that's 3.75lbs each), one at the start, one just before flameout to get more out of my hops.

More recently I've been using very late additions (10 mins at most or just hopstand) so don't really need to boil hops for 60 mins to get the IBUs.

I've also read how folks add their extract at flameout i.e. no boil for at least some of the extract, so I guess you don't necessarily need to boil it to get rid of DMS (or maybe that is only a problem if you do boil, not sure). So long as it is hot enough to be sterilized.

So the question - if I don't really need to boil extract for that long, or hops for 60 mins because I'm using late additions, is it feasible to shorten the boil significantly? 15-30 mins?

What am I missing?
 
You're not missing anything. A 60 minute boil is not always productive or necessary. There is a thread in this forum on a 15 minute pale ale.
 
I have a couple recipes that do 20 to 30 minute boils since I am not trying to get high IBU's but want some flavor for the hops that have higher AA and they turn out great. :mug:
 
No need to boil for 60 minutes unless you need it to hit your IBU's. For my IPA's, I just do a 1oz bittering hop addition of Apollo or Summit at 30 minutes and then throwing a bunch in there at flameout. I haven't boiled longer than 30 minutes in a long time.
