Hi There,

This is my first attempt at trying to make my own recipe. How bad do you think this would taste? Any suggestions? I ran it through Beer Smith, but since I'm too stupid/lazy to understand what everything means, maybe someone here would be kind enough to warn me off if this is a horrible mistake or not.

I don't know about the syrup, but you are going to want to cut the honey malt to 1/4 or 1/2 pound, that stuff is very overpowering. I've found that anything more than 1/2 pound, and that is the only thing you taste, it covers all your other flavors.

I reduced the Honey Malt to 1lb, on your advice. Any other advice anyone else would like to offer?

I plugged it in to Beersmith, and it seems like your IBUs are way low for the style. I'm new to Beersmith as well, but I'm pulling up 10.1 IBUs when the style calls for 40-70. Especially with such a malty, high OG beer, you need to crank that up. The ingredients you have fall more in to an APA, not an IIPA. You'd need even more malt and hops to hit IIPA. Assuming you're sticking with everything else, you're really brewing an APA.

The Saaz is an odd choice, it's usually for German lagers, not APA's. Here's what I've come up with as to how I'd brew it.

9.00 lb Pale Liquid Extract (8.0 SRM) Extract 81.82 %
1.00 lb Lyle's Golden Syrup (0.0 SRM) Extract 9.09 %
1.00 lb Honey Malt (25.0 SRM) Grain 9.09 %
2.00 oz Centennial [10.00 %] (Dry Hop 7 days) Hops -
1.00 oz Goldings, East Kent [5.00 %] (Dry Hop 7 days) Hops -
2.50 oz Centennial [10.00 %] (60 min) Hops 17.4 IBU
2.50 oz Cascade [5.50 %] (45 min) Hops 8.8 IBU
2.50 oz Warrior [15.00 %] (20 min) Hops 15.8 IBU
5.00 gal Denver, Colorado Water
1 Pkgs American Ale (Wyeast Labs #1056) Yeast-Ale

You'll end up with a 1.017FG, 7.2% ABV, and 42 IBUs.

EDIT: Above was assuming a 2 Gallon Pot. What size are you using? Bigger pot = Better hop utilization. If you're in a 5 gallon, your initial recipe may be just fine.

I'm using a 4 gallon pot.
I'll have to adjust my recipe some more.
Thanks for the input!!
Like I've said this is my first attempt at designing a recipe, so I'm willing to take any/all advice.

Recipe: ShiftlessBum I Pee Eh - Beer for those people willing to get drunk enough to pee on the homeless.:tank:

After playing around with Brewhouse and checking out what's available at my local brew shop, this is the recipe I've decided on.
I'll let everyone know how it turns out.
