Just got my second all grain brew in the fermentor. SH2B. Wanted to say thanks for all the incredible information on this forum. I definitly could not have done it with out you.

One tip I did want to pass on that I learned from my very cloudy (but tasty) first beer. Even when batch sparing, slow down the drain. Helped a ton for keeping the gunk out of the boil kettle. Of course it took an hour to drain 2 sparges.

Anyway thanks again and keep the good posts coming.

Congrats on your second all-grain brew day! About the material coming through in your sparge, do you know about vorlaufing?

Oh yes. So far my processes is add sparge water. Give the mash a gentle stir. Wait a few minutes to settle. Vorlauf as needed. I use some tin foil when returning to the mash. Then drain.

I think my first batch had too much gunk due to the slots in the copper manifold. I made them with a dremel and they are thick enough to allow small particles through if I go too fast. Also the NB kit seemed to have a little bit of dust from the crush. Slowing down helped a ton.

Nothing like waking up to the lovely sound of "bloop bloop" coming from the fermentation closet :)
