Plus, it also isn't helping matters that it is drier than a popcorn fart outside right now. Our RH is 23%. I've boiled off 2 gallons in an hour.
You think it's dry there? If you get stationed in Colorado you will know what dry is. Today the Denver area the RH is 20% and the dry weather hasn't even started yet.
On the plus side: Summer evenings are fantastic here. It cools off a bit and the dry air makes it perfect for being out on the patio either at your house or your favorite establishment. :)

Here's to hoping.....Sounds like a dream.

Well, Pliny the Bastard (EDIT, wrong gender) is done. Chilled, pitched, and ready to rock.

10 ounces of hops in this one.
Here's the bottom of the kettle:

CRIKEY!

I'm glad this is done. Turned out to be a long brew day because of the efficiency problem, turns out I actually had to dilute with some water when all was said and done. Gravity is sitting at 1.074, as targeted.

Damn its good to be a gangster.

Fer****sake, you didn't let your wort touch that non-food-grade plastic thingy, did you??! :D

Looks good man, about a week and a half and I get to brew again! Don't forget to update your sig, f00!

You think it's dry there? We're at 7% and haven't hit dry season yet either ;). It gets dry in NC? I was there in July once; just a weeeeeee bit humid. But then there was that time in Orlando in June. WTF? You end up getting accustomed to about anywhere you live I guess though.

You're a Bayview native? $$

I work at te firehouse over on Chase and Euclid (1st and Oklahoma) so I'm in that area alot. I might be getting a temp transfer over to 8th and Hayes soon (8th and Lincoln) but we'll see what Admin wants to do. Since they got me out acting out of title all the time anyways and the boss there is going on 120 days of Military leave it would make sense to put me over there . . . but since it makes sense it probably wont happen :p

** Edit **
NM, she's a East Towner . . . unless she's up on the one up in the North Shore

Not exactly sure where all those places are, but she lives right by Brady St., also near the Art Museum. I used to know Milwaukee and surrounding area quite well, but 15 years and lots of dead brain cells will take that away from ya. :mug:
We frequent a sushi restaurant on Prospect every time we go. Great place.
I'll PM you if we have plans to go back to brew city anytime soon. Love to tip a few with ya!

my 2 cents (give or take a penny), are you using standerdized numbers for the malts? some seem on the high side, i rate crystal at 1.030, and corn sugar at 1.040, i know they are basically means (2-row is like 1.033-1.036) its probably neither hear nor there...just a thought.

I use standard numbers from promash. I used generic "English 2-row" for this recipe, as I didn't have exacts for halcyon. I suppose that could have something to do with it. When I was putting the recipe together it did occur to me only 11 lbs. of grain for a 1.075 brew was on the low side. Good call, but I don't know how to fix it!

Is there an 11 lb minimum for an order of hops from them? Their site says 11lb, then under that it says Bags $/ lb. It doesn't say if you can order just 1 lb or not.

If you download the pdf catalog, they have homebrewer prices /quantities in that. I think. ;)

Just kegged a Pliny The Elder clone. Incredible brew! You will love it.

Wow...this mofo is kickin'! Of course because of my spontaneous decision to brew yesterday, I didn't have time to get a starter going, so I pitched 2 packets of safale-56. It is really going to town right now. My whole house smells of fermentation. It is so lovely.

With that hop schedule I bet it does smell good. :)

We pulled a sample of this thing tonight......holy crap is that citrusy! I love it, but this thing is a monster. And to think, it still has 4 dry hop additions to go!

Two questions:

1) How did this turn out?
2) Someone (SwAMi75) said that there were still dry hop additions to add, what were they?

1) It turned out awesome. Prolly the best recipe I've done yet. It is a true monster of a beer. The hop flavor that came through was pretty awesome--nothign like I've ever tasted before.

2) It had 3 dry hop additions for approximately 2 weeks each, of 1.25 ounces EACH of columbus, centennial and simcoe.

I just re-brewed it actually. It was that good. Moving it to secondary tonight, then I'm gonna wait 2-3 weeks and dry-hop and then bottle the whole batch.

Dude how long do you wait after dry hopping to bottle?

HMMM. I have never thought to DH in stages like that. When I brewed PTE my recipe called for a total of 6.75oz which I chucked in all at once and left it for a month. Turned out great. I may try doing it in stages next time. Are there advantages? Probably my favourite recipe to date. Trying a FFF Dreadnaught next.

No, I haven't tried a IIPA yet and I'm collecting data. That's pretty dry for that big of a beer and I suspected yours was from the people around here who have tried it. I think Pliny finishes at 1.012 or so. Supposedly, a dry finish is something that is often overlooked by people who brew IIPAs, and it is essential.

I agree. That much malt (in an IIPA) could be sickening sweet if it doesn't finish.

This is by far the best beer I've done. Vinnie really has a killer recipe here.

Is this that Pliny I tried the other night? That was an AWESOME beer. Pretty much convinced me to brew an IPA next instead of a brown ale.

Baron, have you brewed this yet? I was just checking out my hop inventory, and I really need to brew one of these to clean out my freezer...

do you have to use whole hop additions for the boil or whould pellets work just as well? also...does 1.5oz chinook whole hops equal 1.5oz chinook pellets or is there a conversion?
