I have never ran my wort through a filter/screened strainer prior to pitching my yeast. I have always used hop pellets. Should I be doing this for any reason? I pour everything from my kettle into my fermenter. I am brewing at the moment and would like some input. Thanks

Oh, and I have also been making beer from recipes, rather than pre made kits. I have a good amount of leftover ingredients. Other than yeast, is it crucial to refrigerate everything?

Thanks again

I usually use a 11" funnel with a filter built-in, and that keeps hop particles and irish moss out of my primary. It's probably not necessary since everything will drop from suspension anyways while fermenting.

Also, I would keep leftover hops and specialty grains in the fridge or freezer - particularly the hops.

I never filter anything from my boil. I find it all drops out really quick anyway so I'm not sure if it is really going to make a lot of difference.

I used to not filter, then I started doing yeast washing, and was unhappy with the amount of hop trub I was catching, as well as the wasted beer in the trub, so I started funnel + SS colander. It catches a LOT of hops (I have to clear the colander about 3x per 5g, more if hoppier) but it also helps to aerate the beer while transferring to primary. I typically have 3-5" of beer foam from the aeration... enough that I've had to wait for it to settle to transfer the last bits of wort.

I used to use the funnel with the little screen on it but it clogged so much it was crazy.
What I do know, which doesn't take too long is:
sanitize a 5gal strainer bag, and a brew bucket. I pour the cooled wort into the bucket and the bag catches all the stuff then I pour the wort back into the brew pot and then to my better bottle with no filter on the screen. Works great and really seems to add some more O2 to the pour.

I ran my last batch of cooling wort through a gold toned coffee filter. It is a fine mesh filter that stopped a lot of gunk. I firsrt sanitized with Starsan ...

It may have helped put a little more O2 in the work as it passed through the screen. I have no way of telling.

The little screen did get clogged up three or four times. Easy fix with a tap on the inside of the sink, water, and a spritz of Starsan.

I open the spigot on my BK and let it run through a SS colander into a bucket. It aerates the wort. I also aerate it by pouring wort Back n forth from bucket into fermenter. Like someone else said, I get a ton of foam.
My yeast (w/a starter) jump off within 8 hours or less :)
