Hi guys, I'm new here and have been doing a lot of research on sanitizers since I got my first kit this week. I have a question for those more clued up than me, we use F10SC link as a general sanitizer at home and for our pet's food bowls and beds etc. I was wondering if one would be able to use it for sanitizing beer equipment? It has no odor and it claims to be " bactericidal, virucidal, fungicidal, sporicidal". Its what our local vet uses to clean their equipment as well. Any thoughts?

I'd say probably.

My question would be "is it no-rinse?". If I had to use it I would probably rinse with plenty of boiled, cooled (not below 110F) water.

Assuming you're new to the hobby and not just the forums, IMHO I'd say that you should look for a cheap, reliable, no-rinse sanitizer until you get a few batched done and then start experimenting with a different sanitizer.

How long can the product be stored, as a solution, without losing efficacy? If it can't be stored and reused, it is rather expensive compared to Starsan.

Will it be harmful to yeast?

I'm still trying to do the chemistry on this thing, but what i'm worried about is what polyphenols might arise from the residual unrinsed chlorine based chemicals... you might be making beer that tastes like condoms....

Just sayin'...

Thanks for the replies guys, I am new to the hobby, I was wondering as the stuff is dirt cheap here in South Africa and we use for general cleaning at home and for the dogs and cats, although I would have no way of knowing if their water tasted like condoms afterwards :p.. Don't think I'll take the chance just yet, will just pick up some Iodophor here as we don't have Star-San. I will try it out sometime in the future and see what happens and what it tastes like

Hi cave man, in South Africa, it's really hard to get hold of Star San like what most guys in the States use.

Majority of the guys around here use Idophor or Perasan.
Perasan is used by many micro breweries and dairy farms to sanitize food contact surfaces and vessels. Mixed in the right quantities, (about 4 -5 ml per 1l of water) will be a no-rinse sanitizer.

here is an example

http://brewmart.co.za/index.php?route=product/product&path=61_91&product_id=185

Otherwise, there is a chemical company locally making a similar Star San product.

I have not used the 'AcidiSan' myself, but I highly recommend Persan. :mug:

Wowzers I see the StarSan is crazy expensive on their site, I was thinking of picking up some Iodophor from beerlab, http://www.beerlab.co.za/collections/finings/products/no-rinse-sanitiser-iodophor.

Overall though, I reckon I will give the F10SC a pass

The Iodophor works really well and lasts forever in its undiluted form, but it WILL stain your plastic utensils, fermenter etc.

Where are you based? In the Cape? That's where beerlab is based. Idophor works well.

Nah in Joburg, so I build up some products before I order as their shipping is not the cheapest but hey, I will be ordering the 500ml Iodophor and the stuff for my next batch. Thanks for the insights guys
