I bought a 6 pack of Sam Adam's Brewmaster's Collection (2xBlack Lager, 2xHoney Porter, 2xBrown Ale) and I really enjoyed the Brown Ale. What style is this Northern or Southern Brown? I don't want to clone this beer but I want to make something similar, I am pretty sure it would be a Northern English Ale.
I set out to do some 'research' Friday night, bought some Newcastle and Samuel Smith's Brown Ale. Had the Newcastle first, it tasted like skunk ass, pretty much ruined my night. The Samuel Smith's wasn't that great, I think it was old (or I still had nasty flavors in my mouth). It is really hit or miss here with these beers, I think I want to make a Northern English brown but I can get hold of a good, fresh commercial example to make sure.
Oh, BTW, I think that the Sam Adam's Black Lager might be one of my favorite SA beers.
