I was wondering if you think this grain bill would work. I was playing with Beer Smith and I was thinking it might be light and crisp enough to make a good backbone for a hoppy pale ale or IPA.

I would mash for medium body and shooting for 1.061 OG and try to finish it up at 1.012

10.00 lb Pale Malt (2 Row) US (2.0 SRM) Grain 76.92 %
2.00 lb Vienna Malt (3.5 SRM) Grain 15.38 %
0.50 lb Rye Malt (4.7 SRM) Grain 4.00 %

Thoughts?

looks fantastic. I love simple grain bills. With the vienna and rye you should have plenty of malt backbone. I make an APA thats 70% Pilsner and 30% Maris Otter and its still plenty for the hops.

Your grain bill looks fine and tasty! Half a pound of rye malt won't lend much to flavor, but it should add nicely to head retention if you're worried about that. If you want a more noticeable rye component, I'd go for 2-3 lbs of rye. Maybe 2lbs of rye malt and 1lb of Flaked Rye (just have rice hulls if you do that as rye can get really sticky). Otherwise, you should have a nice, malty base for your IPA.

Looks good, but like stated if you want the rye to come through Id add a little more, around 10-15%.

As others have pointed out, you can easily go with more rye. I do a RyePA with 60% 2-row, 20% Rye, 10% C60L and 10% Munich.

The one thing to note is that rye does contribute some apparent dryness, so you should either be expecting that or doing something to balance it out (hence why my PA uses 10% of Crystal 60L).

I was trying to stay away from the sweetness of crystal. My last IPA was only 4% C40 and 4% carapils and was really good, but I wanted to try something a little different.

The rye was more for head retention and to help dry it a little bit instead of carapils. I'm planning on mashing at 152 and hitting it with 50 IBU's. I just wanted to make sure there would be enough malt backbone to showcase the hopping.

vienna is my new favorite semi specialty malt. Iv got a 55lb bag of it, and i put 4 lbs in a 1.080 IPA that is tasting very fine.

Don't fear the Vienna. Go for an all-Vienna base for your next batch. I'm totally hooked. Got a nice Vienna Lager on draft now.

The more I read about it the more I think I'm gonna buy a sack of it instead of pils...either that or get two more buckets and two more lids in addition to my 6 :mug:

No fear my friend. I did a 90% vienna my first go with it and i ended up with a very deep amber/red color. Its a very tasty brew but not what i was expecting. So now i put 2 lbs in a 10g batch, and its turned out fantastic.

I usually do my IPA grain bill with 2-row, Vienna and crystal. I've been really happy with how it comes out.
