I am making a RIS and at the last minute I decided to add a half pounds flaked oats for body. I don't have a LHBS, so I went to the Fresh Market and all they had was rolled oats.

Can I use them instead of flaked barley/oats? ANy special prep? I am brewing tomorrow so any advice will help?

I have heard to roast them and then cook them beofre adding to the mash.

Thanks

I did this before, once, I did not prepare the rolled oat at all and it did not ruined my beer. But the next time I will boil the oat at least 5min at low boil to gelatinize the grain completly before adding it to the mash or the steeping(for the partial mash brewers).
What it did in the beer that I brewed is a massive amount of proteins and a liitle unfermentale starch int the finish product.
