Ring of syrup around outside just below lid.

There's apple flavored syrup the consistency of sugar free/light pancake syrup outside the fermentor. Nothing leaked out of the airlock and as far as I can tell the lid is on tight.
What could cause this to turn to apple syrup? I'm too afraid to open the lid because I don't want apple vinegar.
