sorry complete noob

That's not what you want because it's very difficult to clean. Virtually everyone uses one like this because it's very easy to clean. That whole lid comes off and as a result it's much easier to clean than trying to get into that tiny little opening on the keg you have.

MAN!!! I have been looking for one of them forever. I have some cornies, and some big sankies, but that is sweet! how much did you pay?? I'd kill for that thiG(well, not kill). those are hard to find, and worth some $$$. :rockin:

Keep the keg. It's a regular sanke connection type which some people actually PREFER for kegging as there are less parts to fail or so I'm told. I use Sanke kegs for fermenting in and they work great. They are not that hard to clean when you soak hot oxiclean in them. Just as easy as cleaning a better bottle and tons of people use those.

how do you ferment in one of these?
what do you do for an air lock, does that core come out?
picked it up for 25$

Aren't these available at almost any liquor store? Maybe it's just in Kansas, but I can get a keg like this anywhere.

Personally, I like to be able to get in a corny keg, hit it with a brush, and really see it's clean. I can't imagine fermenting in one. What a mess!

I think in most areas of the US they are available just like a 15.5 gallon Sanke keg. Maybe in Kansas they are more plentiful than Pennsylvania. The picture shows either a 5 gallon (1/6 barrel) or a 7.75 gallon (1/4 barrel). The 1/4 barrels are great for fermenting 5 gallon batches in but I use a 15.5 gallon keg for 5 gallon batches as well.

Fermenting in them really is not a big deal and I like it soooo much more than plastic. Once I transfer the beer I rinse it out about two times and then fill with hot oxiclean solution and let it sit overnight just like cleaning a Better Bottle. The next day I then take a carboy brush for the top lid portion just for good measure. The great thing about fermenting in them is the fact that you can steam sanitize in them during the heating of your sparge or mash water, transferring using CO2 and avoiding oxygenation, no worry of scratching plastic and harboring bacteria and pressurized fermentation if desired. For me I remove the keg spear and insert a size 11 drilled plug with an airlock but there are many options.

As far as using it for serving finished beer I do know that some people actually prefer them over the cornies for various reasons that they would know better than me.

Ya those are cool little guys, I have one as well I have been holding onto just because I don't know what to do w/ the damn thing.

Yaeh, I had two of these given to me when I was looking for a 55 liter keg to make a keggle with. A guy who wholesales imported beer had 2 of them and didn't want them, so I took them anyway. They are 30 liter.
I'll eventually use them for something. Right now they aren't eating any grub.

I picked up one similar at a yard sale for 10 bucks....mine's only a 19 or 20 L one though....has Labatt on it.
