Revenue Beer Stamps -
Engraved stamps from 1866 to 1971

Beer revenue stamps are stamps used to collect taxes and fees. Breweries purchased them from the government and attached them to taxed items. The stamps were printed on sheets, without perforations. Brewers had to cut the stamps apart, cancel them, and paste them over the bung of the beer barrel so that tapping the barrel destroyed the stamp.

The design of the early revenue stamps featured elements similar to postage stamps and banknotes. Designer’s back then (140 years ago) never took the easy way out. If you look at the 1971 you’ll notice the design of every stamp is completely different. Only some small elements are re-used.

These are great, thanks :) I wish I had a hogshead to go along with the stamp now!! I'd take the month off of work :D

I will probably make use of these somehow, even if it is just printing and framing..

So is a hogshead just a double barrel? or is it a range from 2 bbls to 4 barrels? or am I on the completely wrong track?

These are kind cool though. Might print one off and add it to the carboy

Yeah Tinga, a hogshead is 2 barrels...a tun is 4 hogsheads. I don't want to sound greedy though, so I'll be happy with a barrel :p
