I cannot get Black Patent malt where I am so I was wondering if anyone can suggest a substitute?
I'm doing a porter partial mash next and will be adding
2.5 oz Cascade (Boiling) or posibly Williamette
1 oz Goldings (Aroma) or possibly Williamette
1lb of undecided malt

I was thinking maybe Chocolate malt or Carafa Special 1-3
Any suggestions regarding this recipe would be great.
Its my first foray into grains so I want to keep it relatively simple.:mug:

I'd probably go with the Carafa Special that has an SRM of 600 vs Chocolate at 350. Black Patent is at 525 SRM.

You could always roast a little of your own malt in the oven.

Lets face it if your going for black then the SRM doesn't need to be too accurate.

There's info out there but roast on high and take some out at different intervals and asses the results.
