Hey Guys,

I have been following for a while now but I have not posted much. I am in the process of brewing a Pale Ale that requires two rounds of dry hopping. Do I need to remove the hops from the first round of dry hopping before adding my second round of hops or is it cool to leave them in for the 10 full days before I keg this batch? I am not using a hop bag at all, I am just pouring the pellets right in.

Thanks for your help!

You can leave the first load in or remove if you bagged them.

Most lupulin extraction is completed after 1-3 days, at room temperature, going down rapidly thereafter. If left too long some hops develop grassy flavors from the vegetable (leafy) parts of the hop cones, more so from pellets. Most high alpha hops have enough flavor and aroma masking any grassiness that developed. Noble hops are notorious for grassy notes in dry hops.

So I'd say dry hop 6-7 days before packaging and add your 2nd charge 3-4 days later. Cold crash for 24-48 hours, and package. You could also add your second (or 3rd) charge of dry hops in a bag directly to your keg, and leave it there until the keg kicks. Put a weight in it, like glass marbles or spare stainless T or so, so it sinks.

I use one of these: Dry Hop Screen and remove the preceding hop charge prior to adding the next addition...makes it real easy. I dry hop for 3-4 days max. per addition
