Regulator fitting

I have a CO2 regulator with a barbed fitting and need this fitting to work with my gas line:

You can buy the same fitting without the check valve from LOWES for a few dollars - it's a 1/4" flare X 1/4" pipe fitting.

How important is the check valve?

The check valve is not needed for the regulator to work but it will prevent beer from backing up into the regulator body, which BTW rarely happens enyways.
