So, made a purchase of this 1 stovetop AG kit:
https://www.geterbrewed.ie/stove-top-ingredient-kit-multi-hop-pleasure/

Thought it might come with instructions for mash water amounts etc but no such luck.
Admittedly I'm a follow the numbers type of guy so despite trying to do the calculations I can't seem to settle on figures for mash and sparge water amounts.
Grain weight is 1.08 KG and I was intending to use an 18 litre pot to boil but have access to smaller pots if more suitable.
Have the Brooklyn Brewshop 1 gallon book so think I can just use some of their measurements and go from there but not too sure there

Sorry if it seems I'm being a bit lazy and asking others to work this out for me but I can't seem to see the woods for the trees here.

Thanks

I think we need more information. What are you using for mash tun? How much dead space is there? Are you doing BIAB (Brew In A Bag) ? What the expected OG? Do you know og preboil? Any guesses for your boil off rate?

If I'm just going to ballpark it, if you want to end up with 5 liters of beer in the bottle/keg, you'll need about 6l in fermenter which means you'll probably need around 8-8.5 liters preboil. Again it will depend on your equipment how much dead space, grain absorption etc to calculate your strike water and sparge amounts... Again these number are really a shot in the dark...

Yeah, initial plan was to do BIAB in an 18l pot but then got thinking to do a mash then sparge and would use a smaller pot/s.
Mash tun would just be a small stainless pot with a jacket thrown over it.

Fermenter is a 5 litre carboy
No clue about what OG should be as it's a premixed kit with no instructions.
Can email company i bought it off but I'd love to brew tomorrow and don't expect a reply on a bank holiday Sunday

Well if you've only got a 5l fermenter you can only make about 3.5-4l of wort because you'll need about 1l head space in the fermenter to account for the fact that the yeast create a huge foam head (krausen).

Which means at the end you'll have about 3l of beer to drink owing to the fact that fermentation creates a yeast/trub cake that can take up to 1l of volume...

Grain absorption is usually around 1l/kg and with boil off rate I'd say that you would need about 7 liters of water for this brew. If you have the means for brew in a bag I'd go that route and not bother with sparging. You might lose some efficiency but your batch is actually smaller than the kit is aiming for so that alone will make up for it.

If you insist on mashing go 4l mash in first then sparge 3l.

Good luck and don't forget to have fun.

Cheers, definitely different figures to what I was coming up with :(

Will do BIAB so, have done a few 5 gallon batches so hopefully be a bit easier

Thanks

Well put it this way it's better in some way to underestimate your water as you can always top it up with sterile water before pitching. If you overshoot you'll have to boil longer or settle with less abv.

Company emailed back with numbers etc so pleased with that.

Had bought 2 1 gallon kits, did a BIAB of the one shown above as advised in thread but will follow the method they emailed with the other

Thanks again
