I've got 3 yeast cakes on the go - a light (US-05), a dark (1187 Ringwood) and an ale (S-04)

The S-04 has given me a bit of trouble since the start so I might swap that out - the US-05 I'm thinking of swapping with Mangrove Jack's M44 next brew

Anyway - here is the question - I've used all three cakes 4 times now - with no off flavours (apart from the erratic S-04) - I've read people use fresh yeast after 3rd brew or so - but I don't see how the yeast can mutate much if you're reusing it immediately after bottling

Every 2nd or 3rd brew I clean the carboys - and I've started throwing away half the trub each time

Has anyone got any thoughts on the re-use thing?

I only pitch on the cake if it's a small to large beer. (brew the under 5, then use that cake for the 9%). and that's it since the second usually stresses the yeast.

that said, I have never tested this since I make enough bad beer as it is.

I usually start from scratch after 3 or 4 times just because by that time I feel I've gotten my moneys worth. Dry yeast is cheap.

If I was brewing and realized I had no yeast I wouldn't hesitate to use it another time.
