Here is my weldless ball valve assembly

image-856923336.jpg

Should I attach it like this with half of the compression fitting assembly on the outside of the keggle leaving additional parts away from the keggle (and open myself to more future mishaps)

It would allow my dip tube to be closer to the middle

Or should I set it up with the entire compression fitting inside the keggle which would leave less play on the outside but....

Push my dip tube further from the middle.....

It appears I will need to trim my dip tube a bit anyway if I want it to draw straight from the bottom, but cutting and drilling this stuff is proving to be quite time consuming (mostly because I have inadequate tools etc.)

Well what do you think gents? I'm obviously not too handy and just learning this stuff as I go.

I would make sure the compression fitting is inside. That way...if you need to remove the dip tube for some reason, you don't have to remove the whole assembly. You'll have to cut the tube, but it will work better for you in the end.

That's the kind of advice a not so handy not so smart major all grain/tools in general noob could use. Thank you sir!

I agree. Put it on the inside.

I do not know your situation or what this particular vessel will be used for/as but here is some info you should know about...

If this is for the BK, I would order up a side pickup tube (not the whirlpool one) and ditch the center draw. Traditionally you will get break material, hop gunk and all sorts of "goo" at the bottom of the keggle if you chill the wort inside it. Whatever the side tube gets plus a little tip if needed is all you will want...

If it is for the HLT then it really does not matter all that much.

If it is for the MLT then I assume you are going to set up a braid manafold or FB. Which the center draw is perfect for. You can even turn a cut top into a FB as seen here: https://www.homebrewtalk.com/f51/cut-keg-top-false-bottom-192413/index3.html post 24 was my build. I still use my DIY FB with my keggle MLT and have been kicking the idea around about making another one for my round cooler MLT since it works so well, YMMV.

Hello there,

I will using this setup for my hlt and bk. all are modified keggles. I don't plan to chill the wort in the bk but rather I'll using a counter flow of some kind (at least that's what I initially thought about). For my mash tun I bought a prepackages setup that is very similar to this

It's from home brew stuff. The false. Bottom looks really small to me and sits much lower than I expected...

I was planning on using some sort of hop stopper but you make a great point about not drawing directly from the bottom of the bk do you have photos of your setup that I can look at?
