Quick heatstick question.

I just started building one. my drain pipe doesnt have the hex on the end(didnt realize till just now) can I get away with just JB welding my element to the pipe or is the hex absolutely necessary?

When submerging electronics in water, "can I get away with" sounds a lot like: "will this kill me".

I wouldn't risk it.
